In this question Would harvesting static electricity from the atmosphere work with a kinetic flywheel? and may be others the comments are showing Timothy Caddell instead of the given Muze I go by. Why is it doing that?

It's not clear why that post is showing Timothy instead of Muze. Looking at your profile, it doesn't appear that you have had any recent name changes that could have potentially caused the user handle to be renamed in the comments. Typically, comments are static though and don't update when a user changes their name.

And given that some of the comments on that thread are from me, it's worth noting that I have no memory of addressing comments towards you as Timothy.

Is the Timothy Caddell account another account that you have used on other sites? And if so, has any action at the SE level been taken with that account? If not, then this may be something that SE has to look into.

  • $\begingroup$ If that was their username at the time, this would be expected behaviour from the system, no? The "@user" part of a comment is still text AFAIK, it just has the ability to auto-complete with usernames who can be flagged. I wouldn't expect the system to update those references when a user changes there name, and you can see examples all the time where SE users change names and the comments still reference the old ones. $\endgroup$ – JMac Nov 19 '18 at 21:15
  • $\begingroup$ @JMac The OP has only used two handles on this site that I'm aware of, "Muze" and "Jenn." To my knowledge, they have never gone by "Timothy Caddell", and when I wrote the comments in that post they were to "Muze." $\endgroup$ – user16 Nov 20 '18 at 13:06
  • $\begingroup$ Okay that's pretty strange. I didn't even realize comments could really change like that after the fact. $\endgroup$ – JMac Nov 20 '18 at 13:18
  • $\begingroup$ I suspect it comes from the Team that Muze bought/used (meta.stackoverflow.com/q/376447/855869). They might have inserted their actual name and one of the system bugs has mixed it in somewhere else. $\endgroup$ – Federico Nov 27 '18 at 11:37
